The Different Types of Grease Cartridges

Traditional, Reiner Type™ or LubeShuttle™ grease cartridges, what’s the difference?

The traditional 400 gram grease tube, with two open ends and a circumference of 53mm, has been in use in every plant workshop the world over for over 60 years. Easy to use and cheap to produce this type of cartridge has long been the only other option to using a bucket or tub of grease.

In recent years there has been two new grease cartridges introduced to the market, both of these use a new screw type technology. This new technology offers the following benefits:

  • Less mess and wastage. As apposed to the traditional cartridge with two open ends the screw type cartridge is cleaner to fit to the grease gun because it just screws in, removing the need to open the cartridge end. This means less mess and also less waste as the cartridge can be fully emptied.
  • Higher pressure. Using the twin lock type grease gun, a HOL0041, or a Lubeshuttle™ gun, HOL0199, higher pressure is enabled due to the cartridge being sealed and not open ended. Unlike a traditional type cartridge and gun the pressure comes from the pumping action rather than the sprung plunger.

So what’s the difference between Reiner™ and Lubeshuttle™?

Well the biggest single difference is the size of the thread on the cartridge. The German made Reiner™ cartridge features a 20mm male thread while the Lubeshuttle™ cartridge has a wider thread at 33mm.

Both cartridge types are 400 grams in size.
